Abstract

Translation has gradually come to be perceived as prismatic rewriting: a practice that informs and transforms, not simply reproducing, but rather generating multiple equivalent authentic texts. Poetic translation, as a dynamic and interactive form of writing, has always thrown up challenges when it comes to distinguishing the creative labour of the poet from that of the translator. In this context, Nachdichtung repeats in another language an already iterative and metaphorical poetic process, often with the aid of interlinear translations. In Nachdichtung, translation and poetry are shown to be mutually inclusive events that both occur at the border and interface of bodies, cultures and languages. Each Nachdichter:in will have their own interpretation of the translatorâs task, their own experience and understanding of the aesthetic and cultural norms that deserve to be upheld or challenged when a poem is re-expressed.

The Slovak-German poetry anthology Lob des Wildtiers im Winter (2015) is exemplary of prismatic translation, offering readers multiple non-hierarchical and contemporaneous poetic rewritings side-by-side. This chapter attempts to trace Kerstin Henselâs stylistic and thematic presence through the anthology, spotlighting and cross- referencing the decisions she makes as a Nachdichterin. Employing a multi-pronged approach, combining comparative literary and translational analytical methods, this chapter presents close readings of Henselâs contributions to Lob des Wildtiers im Winter: Gedichte aus der Slowakei in order to investigate how and to what ends she wields translatorial and poetic agency in the volume.
