Abstract

Despite their obvious differences, J. T. Fraser and Edmund Husserl also have approaches to temporality and temporal experience that offer parallel touching points, suggesting that a comparison of the two might be fruitful. As an approach to such a comparison, this paper first works through the different levels of temporal measure discussed by each of these theorists. I then consider how these two hierarchies might align with one another, and whether they might work together to produce a more detailed and nuanced system. Finally, I carry out two analyses intended to bring these two positions further into conversation and which suggest that introducing Husserl’s concepts and leveled analyses into Fraser’s “nested hierarchy” might allow for new approaches to our understanding of time in general.
