Abstract

The seventh and final chapter summarises the conclusions reached in the previous chapters, and reflects on the overarching characteristics of Proclean mereology in four respects. First, we determine how exactly Proclus defines the concept of being whole in relation to the concepts of unity and goodness. Special emphasis is placed here on the fact that Proclus’ use of the term ‘whole’ must on some occasions be taken in a broadly logical sense, i.e., as a unity which defines a set of collected parts, whereas on other occasions it must be understood in an axiological sense, i.e., as indicating the extent to which a thing is wholesome rather than simply a whole. Second, the extent to which Proclus’ theoretical framework is able to remain consistent across his exegeses of the Platonic works is examined. Third, Proclus’ late ancient mereology is compared to the theories of modern philosophers, and the advantages each has over the other are made clear. Lastly, the author critically assesses the question of whether Proclus’ axiological understanding of the concept of wholeness serves as an adequate link between his metaphysics and his ethics.
