Abstract

France currently has nine UNESCO Global Geoparks (UGG), in the footsteps of the first UGG – Haute-Provence – which set the standard for the Global Geopark network over 30 years ago. This designation provides international recognition and highlights the geological heritage of a defined territory. Its purpose is to foster and celebrate the connections between outstanding regional geological sites and other aspects of natural and cultural heritage. Ultimately, it contributes to sustainable territorial development by raising awareness and engaging the senses.

The Hauts-de-France region boasts a remarkable geological heritage. The regional inventory already listed 146 sites in 2020, many of which are located in or around the Boulonnais region within the territory of the Regional Natural Park of Caps and Marais d’Opale and its fringes (CRPG, 2019). Around thirty sites of significant scientific and educational value – some of international importance – have been identified, ranging from the Audomarois marshes to the coastal cliffs and dunes, passing through the Marquise quarry basin of Marquise.

Across the Channel, the Kent Downs National Landscape is also preparing a UGG application to enhance its heritage related to chalk formations and their associated landscapes. These two geologically linked territories, exemplified by the facing chalk cliffs of Dover and Cap Blanc-Nez, belong to the same morphological and structural entities: The Weald–Boulonnais anticline and the Dover–Calais Strait. This geological, geographical, economic, and cultural coherence naturally lends itself to a unified initiative.

The two projects are now converging toward a joint application for a new Geopark around an extraordinary region that bridges geological and human history with contemporary environmental and sustainability challenges. This Geopark would encompass major geosites both on land and at sea, aiming to reposition the territory within the framework of public education for diverse audiences, including local communities, stakeholders, and visitors. The goal is to tell a story – one that spans the Earth’s history and humanity’s impact on it. In doing so, it would promote the rich geological heritage of both the Boulonnais region and the Dover Strait.

However, this initiative presents challenges. The question of joint or even unique applications for the Geopark label encompassing the two countries (France and UK) must be considered between the two territories, a major part of the geological history, but also of human activity, is hidden by the waters of the Strait.

How can these often-overlooked riches be made visible and accessible to the general public? How can a natural boundary be transformed into a unifying element? These are among the key objectives of the “Cross-Channel Geopark” project. Perhaps the time has come to shine a new light on this remarkable natural site.
