Abstract

Amidst the concurrent 2024 presidential elections in the United States and Taiwan, alongside ongoing negotiations concerning the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st Century Trade, this article aspires to assess the current bilateral engagements within the trade-climate change-energy nexus. It seeks to glean insights from recent collaborative initiatives in green economy growth on both bilateral and regional scales. The central argument posits that a strategic integration of elements and opportunities from existing collaborations in climate change, environment, and energy regimes is paramount on the innovative platform of the Taiwan-U.S. Initiative on 21st Century Trade. By imbuing this Taiwan-U.S. bilateral trade initiative with a âgreenâ focus, it has the potential to evolve into a bilateral green economy agreement reminiscent of the Singapore-Australia Green Economy Agreement (2022) in the future. Moreover, there exists the prospect for Taiwan and the U.S. to broaden their collaboration to other international platforms, such as IPEF, APEC and WTO.
