Abstract

The article deals with the history of acquisitions of ancient Roman statues and busts made by the Russian Grand Tourists, the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich, son of Catherine II, and his wife, the Grand Duchess Maria Fiodorovna, when visiting Th. Jenkins in Rome on February 24, 1782. While two of the statues, A Statue of the Empress Faustina in the Character of Venus and An Amorino are still in the Pavlovsk Palace near St Petersburg and The Genius (Eros Centocelle type) is in the Hermitage Museum, the fourth, The Dancing Faun, was lost in the Pavlovsk Palace fire in 1803, and no attempt was undertaken to find the evidence of it. However, letters of Hamilton and Jenkins reveal information about the archaeological find, type of the figure (the Medici Faun), restoration, price and the sale of the statue, as well as the making of a plaster cast, which (although with a misleading reference to Catherine’s collection) is found in Gotha. The story of the acquisitions also shed light on the fierce rivalry and intrigues between the antiquities market dealers and the Papal authorities, as well as on the interests and ambitions of the international collectors during this historic period.
