Ansgar and Vera Nünning explore competing narratives that have developed from crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, arguing that such crisis narratives involve a diagnosis of the present circumstances in a society, while also presenting possible future scenarios. The authors then turn to a narratological perspective and collect ideas about crisis narratives and crisis metaphors. Furthermore, they show how crises are understood as a deviation from normality and point out that the overall judgement of crises, the perception of default, causes or reasons behind crises, as well as time and place are important for the crisis narratives that they are interested in. Nünning and Nünning also compare possible characterizations of the COVID-19 pandemic and see them as catalysts of latent crises, as deep crises with many dimensions and layers, or as patchworks. They shed light on the potential contagiousness of the COVID-19 pandemic’s narratives by demonstrating how they are spread on social media and books which leads to some kind of infodemic, while the competing crisis narratives also portray an expression of an epistemological crisis by uncovering how truth claims are contingent and knowledge is limited. They conclude by arguing that competing narratives should be seen as complementary representations of the present and the future.
