The Corona pandemic and its effects on everyday life called forth numerous reactions by people worldwide that were shared in various contexts. The crisis also sparked creative impulses in many people, among them the impulse to write poetry. The Corona poems written to the editor of The New York Times and those published on the website “From Ovid to Covid” by laypersons and amateur writers are cases in point. This chapter discusses examples from these groups of poems with a view to identifying how they capture and convey people’s personal experiences with the current situation in their imagery and textual-linguistic structures. The focus is specifically on poems that have a narrative dimension and that juxtapose the past and the present, often in subtle and complex ways. The defamiliarization of common experience is shown to be shared by both the crisis situation of this pandemic and the poetry occasioned by it. On a more abstract level and drawing on psychological research, the chapter discusses what such creative output tells us about the role that artistic expression may have as a coping strategy in times of crisis and what the reading and writing of literary texts may offer as forms of ‘self-therapy’.
