Abstract

The description of space in narrative is static in the sense that, while narrative time continues to unfold, narrated time comes to a pause. Nonetheless, descriptions of space can contribute to the temporal dynamics of narrative when they have a proleptic character. In my paper, I first discuss two spatial mises-en-abîme from Heliodorus’ Ethiopica, exploring the intricate hermeneutic operations that make a place reflect the plot and anticipate the further course of action (I). Then I show that both passages draw on imagery used by ancient poets and critics to describe narrative (II). Finally, I argue that the proleptic dimension of spatial mise-en-abîme, rare and complex as it is, reveals an important point about prolepsis in general (III).
