Abstract

Thomas Hardy adapted and creatively modified Eduard von Hartmannâs thought of the unconscious will which becomes conscious and acquires positive purpose and aspects, as it develops. Hartmann contributed to Hardyâs meliorism, which implied an amelioration and improvement of the human condition thanks to its development of an increasing self-conscious reflexive will. Human beings must have freedom of the will to act as taught by reason, and the will must have freedom to alter Its courses. Schopenhauer and von Hartmann provided Hardy with a well-developed philosophical system which was conducive to his earlier pessimistic outlook. Following the ideas of Schopenhauer and von Hartmann Hardy saw humanity as an essential part of a âuniversal consciousnessâ perhaps prefiguring Carl Jungâs concept of self-awareness and self-knowledge as the most critical faculties of the mind. In his major novels, Hardy describes the tragic journey of his protagonists, usually females, toward spiritual self-awareness and self-knowledge. But in the end, he pulled his approval from von Hartmannâs all-pervasive pessimism about the value of human existence when the latter announced the virtuous annihilation of the human race.
