Abstract

This paper examines the institutionalisation of Christian ministry in the second and third centuries, highlighting the transition from loosely organised community gatherings to more structured and hierarchical ecclesiastical models. The focus is on the adaptation of the household (oikos) model, which provided an effective framework for structuring early Christian communities, mirroring the hierarchical and managerial systems of contemporary society. Through an analysis of the Pastoral Epistles and other early Christian texts, the study illustrates how these scriptural sources advocated for a household-like ecclesiology, positioning bishops and deacons in roles akin to household managers and stewards. This adaptation facilitated the church’s growth and its ability to manage larger congregations while maintaining order and addressing the pastoral needs of an expanding faith community.
