Abstract

The modern art institutions established in Brazil after World War II exemplify how elites in a postcolonial nation responded to the risks of being Cold War pawns and harnessed soft power themselves. A revealing case is the transatlantic and hemispheric negotiations of the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art in SÃ£o Paulo (MAM-SP) and the museumâs inaugural exhibition of international abstract art. Prior study of the exhibition has focused on the motivation of the exhibitionâs curator, Belgian art critic LÃ©on Degand, and has viewed Degand as allied with Brazilian and US industrialists â namely the museumâs founder Francisco âCicilloâ Matarazzo Sobrinho and early patron Nelson A. Rockefeller â in contesting the influence of communism. My account illuminates the motivations and strategies of the Brazilian actors, demonstrating the geopolitical stakes of the exhibition for the leadership of MAM-SP and the specificities of the debates surrounding abstraction, international art, and artistic freedom in Brazil. It brings to light new research to establish that Matarazzo and his advisors attempted to marshal his personal wealth, and the countryâs postwar economic might, to strategically adapt European and US models not to create subsidies or copies, but to autonomously mount internationally visible cultural events.
