Abstract

At the center of this chapter stands a little-known document that sheds light on the Hungarian art scene of the immediate post-war years: a speech given by the painter AurÃ©l BernÃ¡th (1895â1982) in 1947 at the Szinyei TÃ¡rsasÃ¡g (Szinyei Society) in Budapest. This speech is an example of the specific post-war political conflicts and oppression of modernism in Eastern Europe: emphasis on victim status of the actors of modernity, irrational impulses, and obscurity of the dynamics and interest-structures of the social perception of the avant-garde. The conservative forces in the art world were hostile towards the avant-garde, thereby influencing political decision-makers.

To assess the force and relevance of BernÃ¡thâs speech in the coalition years and beyond, BernÃ¡th himself and the evolution of his career need to be examined along with the Szinyei Society and the traditionalist principles it represented in the post-1945 Hungarian art scene in the context of the political forcefield.
