Translatorâs Note
The texts used for the translations that go to make up this anthology of Cattaneoâs writings have been selected by the editors from the most recent and critically reliable editions available. The differences between these editions account for the majority of what may look like inconsistencies of editorial conventions or referencing in this volume. For instance, some of the texts included here were published first as articles in periodicals (in which case they are referred to between inverted commas), then as publications in their own right (in which case the titles are given in italics). Similarly, in cases where the original publication was in the form of an essay in a periodical, but has subsequently been translated and published separately, there will be a difference between the form in which the Italian original is given (in inverted commas) and the English translation (in italics). Within the constraints of attempting to maintain respect for Cattaneoâs original typographical and editorial preferences, every effort has been made, in the texts that are not by Cattaneo, such as the introductory materials and critical apparatus, to adopt standardized and consistent conventions in the customary manner.
The translation contained in Chapter 11 is based on, but at the same time differs materially from, the translation by Ruggero di Palma Castiglione published in the volume edited by Michael Novak in 2010; whereas Chapter 10 is based on my own translation published in 2019. Several other of the passages included in this anthology were also previously translated by myself, and included in the volume entitled Civilization and Democracy edited by Carlo G. Lacaita and Filippo Sabetti in 2006 (for details of all three volumes, see the section entitled âTranslated Writingsâ on p. 378). In all cases the previous translations have been revisedâin the former case heavily, in the latter cases much less soâfor the occasion of this new publication. Convinced of the need to âname the translatorâ wherever possible, I have also occasionally cited the source of translations of quotations from other texts which I have used.
