Transliterations of Arabic and Japanese terms follow the ijmes standards and the modified Hepburn style, respectively. Japanese names are rendered with their given names first, while Chinese names are provided with their family names first, according to the traditional order. After the first mention, authors with Malay names are referred to, despite the convention, by their ‘last’ names, while those with Thai names are referred to by their given names. Bibliographical entries for Tibetan and Burmese names are also listed in traditional order. English translations of all Japanese, Arabic, and Thai materials, unless otherwise stated, are by the author.
