Abstract

This chapter focuses on a single inter-disciplinary collaborative project entitled âStaircaseâ (2000), created by three generations of Holocaust survivors from the same family: Austrian-born Helga Michie (1921â2018); her English daughter, Ruth Rix (b. 1942); and English granddaughter, Rebecca Swift (b. 1963). Commencing with biographical contexts, it describes and analyses the concept and content of âStaircaseâ, and the diverse and significant roles played by the three female artists, revealing how the shadow of the Holocaust, experiences of exile and loss, inherited memory, and complexities born out of conflicting identities can nonetheless result in positive creative outcomes across generations.
