About the Author
Sun Zhongyuan (孫中原) is a professor in the philosophy department at Renmin University of China (中国人民大学), an advisor to doctoral students, the original vice-president of the Chinese Society of Logic (zhongguo luoji xuehui 中國邏輯學會), and currently serves as the vice-president of the China Mozi Institute (zhongguo mozi zuehui 中國墨子學會). In 2008, the Taiwan committee on science approved him for their project to recruit outstanding talents in the field of science and technology and was invited as a visiting professor in the philosophy department and research institute at Taiwan’s Soochow University (東吳大學). He was invited as a member of the editorial board for Records of Chinese Culture-Classics in Philosophy-Hundred Schools of Thought (zhonghua dadian-zhexuedian-zhuzi baijia fen dian 中華大典·哲學典·諸子百家分典), serving as vice-editor of the Hundred Schools of Thought part of the collection. In 1960, he graduated from Renmin University’s philosophy department, staying there to teach directly after graduating. In 1961, he graduated with a degree as a graduate student in logic from the Party School of the Central Committee of C.P.C. (zhonggong zhongyang zhishu gaoji dangxiao 中共中央直屬高級黨校). From 1961–1964 he studied under Wang Dianji (汪奠基) and Shen Youding (沈有鼎) in the Philosophy Research Institute within the Philosophy and Social Sciences department at the Chinese Academy of Science, specializing in the history of logic in China. Afterwards, he took on the successive titles of teaching assistant, lecturer, associate professor, and advisor to master’s degree students. In 1993, he was given a positon as full professor and in 1995 was assigned as an advisor for doctoral students. In 1998, Renmin University assigned him as head of the Logic and Sciences. Between mainland China and Taiwan, he has published over forty academic works and issued over two hundred academic papers. University of Taiwan professor Lin Zhenghong (林正 弘) remarked “professor Sun (Zhongyuan) is a very powerful scholar,” “Taiwanese people admired his scholarly knowledge early on and have been familiar with his success in research,” and “Professor Sun (Zhongyuan)’s high level of scholarship will open a new path for research in the history of logic in China.” University of Taiwan’s Professor Li Xianzhong (李賢中) said of him “professor Sun Zhongyuan is a famous specialist scholar, both in China and outside, in the research fields of logic in China and Mohist philosophy.” The secretary general of the Jin Yuelin Academic Foundation (jin yuelin xueshu jijinhui 金嶽霖學術基金會) Liu Peiyu (劉培育) said “Mr. Sun Zhongyuan is a heavyweight scholar in the field of research in ancient logic in China of philosophic
