Abstract

This chapter traces the reception of 18th-century Swedish poet and intellectual Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflycht from 1774 to 2020, to show how that reception was shaped by the combined force of gender (the fact that Nordenflycht was a woman) and genre (the fact that she wrote poetry). Beginning with the 1774 Mrs Hedvig Charlotta Nordenflychtâs Selected Works and ending with the 2020 The History of Swedish Philosophy, I argue that the images of Nordenflychtâs intellectual identity have shifted dramatically over the years, but that she has consistently been both excluded and includedâor excluded by being includedâin the narratives of Swedish intellectual history.
