Abstract

The chapter proposes the expansion of traditional classifications of labels to include labels and label-like notes whose primary function in a dictionary is not to guide the user in production but to provide additional information for text reception. Such labels and notes, most frequently used in historical and specialised lexicography dictionaries, indicate the markedness of the referent and not of the linguistic element itself and their function is to provide systematic information on technically, historically, geographically or ideologically specific referents of lexemes in a dictionary. As such, they can also be used by lexicographers to organise the semantic structure of a dictionary entry, distinguishing specific senses or subsenses or marking semantic nuances. The expanded label typology could also contribute to the better structuration of electronic dictionary databases. By adopting the proposed division of label types into the markup system such as TEI and by introducing more detailed attributes, it could also contribute to standardisation and unification of historical dictionaries. Appropriately marked labels could also be used in building linguistic ontologies or interlinking dictionary data with knowledge bases and could therefore be applicable in the natural language processing.
