Abstract

This essay examines the moral and ethical permissibility of cadaver use in the context of African theories of moral status. It starts by examining the claim of some African cultures with strong beliefs in reincarnation and the afterlife that the unclaimed cadaver deserves respect. According to this perspective, use of unclaimed cadavers is a form of exploitation and a show of disrespect to the individuals and their families that goes against the principles of beneficence and non-maleficence. In response to this claim, the chapter argues that the unclaimed cadavers, in and of themselves, do not deserve direct respect, as such unclaimed cadavers do not have moral status. It concludes by encouraging Africans to donate dead bodies to further their ability as a people to advance medical knowledge and expertise.
