Abstract

This chapter delves into the complex interplay between ideologies and early avantgarde movements, focusing on how anarchism, Marxism, nationalism, and fascism influenced avantgarde art. Anarchism had a profound impact on early avantgarde movements until the 1920s, succeeded by Marxism and nationalism, while fascism’s influence on Italian futurism was contradictory. These ideologies formed the foundation of various world-views and intertwined with avantgarde movements, driving them to seek ideological and political dominance. Movements like Italian futurism and Russian constructivism embodied radical ideologies through their total acts, including participation in wars. The artistic pursuits of these movements often mirrored their ideological commitments, such as Marinetti’s blending of futurism with nationalism and anarchism. Constructivism, initially influenced by anarchism and later by Marxism, aimed to abolish bourgeois art in favor of universal and communal values. The essay also examines the conceptual evolution of ideology, notably through Lenin’s seminal essay “What Is to Be Done?” and the resulting Marxist view of art as ideological. The post-World War I decline of anarchism and the subsequent marginalization of avantgarde ideologies in the late 1920s, as Marxism-Leninism and fascism became the dominant ideologies in the Soviet Union and Italy, respectively, are also explored. This period saw a significant transformation in the ideological landscape, with avantgarde movements’ revolutionary fervor giving way to the official doctrines of state-sponsored art, leading to their historical relegation and the broader implications for the interplay between art and politics.
