Abstract

The chapter examines why the audience’s reaction to the film screening of Lars von Trier’s The House that Jack Built at the Cannes Festival was so negative. Trier subverts the conventions of well-known horror genres that makes the audience epistemologically—rather than ethically—‘restless.’ This chapter argues that this emotional ‘restlessness’ is ultimately effective enough to intensify the aesthetic effects of the serial killer genre. This also counteracts the genre’s stereotypical tendency to represent violence through seriality or endless repetition.
