Abstract

Kanaka Hawaiâi (Native Hawaiians) intimately understand that the entirety of human existence occurs between the blue abyss of the ocean and the black abyss of the heavens. In many Kanaka cosmogonies, our world emerges from an abyss. In these views, the abyss serves not only as the source of life, but also as our first ancestor from whom we descend and who we continue to embody. The abyss is not only the first ancestor of humanity, but of all things, which creates familial connections between everything in the world. These connections serve as sources of obligation to respect and care for each other, which is particularly true for the youngest of all creationsâhuman beings.
