Abstract

The present contribution offers an analysis of womenâs activism and political mobilization in Aruba and CuraÃ§ao from its early articulations in the 1940s in suffrage movements through to the critical legal victories achieved in the early 1990s. It examines the strategies adopted in effective mobilizations by women, arguing that, even though successes can be attributed to strong intellectual forces and a keen understanding of political tides, in the end the strengths of successful operations lay not primarily in knowledge, ideology or strategy but in the ability to find the right moment, to align and to cooperate and to ride the tidal waves of progress.
