Abstract

Chapter five looks at Widmanstetterâs command and use of Hebrew. As a humanist working on Hebrew texts, Widmanstetter acquired an active command of the language and wrote letters to other Hebraists, as well as to Jewish scholars. A common place book of Hebrew and Aramaic phrases Widmanstetter gathered from various works in his library formed the basis for his letters to Jewish and Christian Hebraist scholars. As the comparison to contemporary letters reveals, Widmanstetter was able to communicate in an elevated style of Hebrew which demonstrated his skills to other scholars and secured him entry to the Hebraist republic of letters. On a more general level, a comparison of the titles in his library with those in his teacherâs collection, Cardinal Egidio da Viterbo, reveal that his notion of Hebraism differed from that of other Christians scholars. While Egidio focused exclusively on Jewish mystical works and texts that could benefit his interpretation of them, Widmanstetter used his knowledge of Hebrew to also receive Hebrew translations of the Arabic tradition. This gave him an advantage over scholars who did not read Hebrew, as many Arabic works were only available as Hebrew translations in early modern Europe.
