Abstract

The large-scale migration of east European Jews westward in the closing decades of the nineteenth century led to debate over Britainâs open borders and ultimately resulted in the implementation of anti-immigrant legislation in the Aliens Act (1905). This is a narrative well told within the scholarship, which has focused on evidencing a rise in both anti-alien and anti-Jewish sentiment in Britain across the 1880s and 1890s, as unprecedented number of Jews were driven out of the Russian Empire by discriminatory laws and violent pogroms. However, little if any attention has been given to those whose response to this historic migratory movement differed from that of Britainâs official policy makers. One such dissenting voice is found in the 19th century Evangelical Christian, whose theological and eschatological beliefs directly informed their perception of, and reaction to, contemporary events. But because the role of religious conviction in determining both individual and organised action has been overlooked in modern history, the active role of evangelical Christians in welcoming, aiding and assisting Jewish refugees and migrants to successfully settle in Britain, has been left entirely unacknowledged. This chapter therefore seeks to bring evangelical involvement in the provision of welfare to newly arrived, immigrant Jews in Britain, centre stage. In doing so, it will contribute to creating a more complex picture of the reception of Jewish immigrants in Britain at the close of the nineteenth and turn of the twentieth century, by challenging existing simplistic narratives that sets native against alien and Christian against Jew.
