Abstract

The chapter is devoted to the analysis of the art in relation to ritual, cultural performance, tradition, and liminality. The examination of the characteristics of avadhÄna in the light of the performance studies and the views represented by Erika Fischer-Lichte, Richard Schechner, Victor Turner, Catherine Bell, Guy McAuley, Marvin Carlson, and others shows the art as a liminoid form of cultural performance that has the traits of a secular ritual. In this chapter, the author analyses avadhÄna in the context of the tenets and aims of performance and cultural performance, the category of âtwice-behaved behaviours,â the concept of communitas, liminality and liminoid phenomena, the flow defined by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the notion of tradition and routine, as well as the definitions of ritual and its relations with performance.
