Abstract

The oscense Pyrennes (Spain), in the same way as many mountainous regions in Europe, have, in recent decades, experienced a decrease in their livestock farming activity and an increase in their tourism sector.

In order to analyze, in the region of Jacetania, the evolution of the livestock and tourism sectors and the possible relations between them, we have collected data concerning the number of farms, livestock censuses and second homes from the decade of the 50’s until the present day.

Subsequently we have calculated the correlations between the series of data for the municipalities of average annual increments in each farming parameter (number of farms, total number of livestock units and number of livestock units of ruminants) and the average annual increments in second homes. These correlations have been calculated for two different stages, before and after 1980, and also for both the total of municipalities and for each of two areas (Pyrennean valleys and Prepyrennean depression) separately.

In the area of the Pyrennean valleys, where touristim development has been spectacular, the correlations between farming and tourism parameters have been negative in all cases considered and for both stages. They could indicate a tendency towards competitivity rather than mutual benefit between tourism and farming activities. Independently from these correlations, one can clearly see the regressive tendency of the agricultural activity, particularly in the extensive farming of ruminants, which takes advantage of grazing resources and which has been the traditional livestock system.

It appears that only in a few situations livestock farming and tourism are linked in a positive way such as in the area of the Prepyrennean depression. In this area the tourism activity is proportionally inferior to that of the valleys.

In general, it can be said that farm production in Jacetania, specially in its Pyrennean valleys, has not yet taken advantage of either tourism or the acknowledgment of the value of its landscape that is maintained by the traditional livestock activity.
