Abstract

Tourism is an extremely important activity in rural Scotland. The majority of visitors to the countryside come to view and pursue activities associated with the landscape, particularly of the mountains and lochs. A wide range of visitor attractions have also developed to provide activities to interest and entertain the visitor and to provide income and employment for the resident population.

Opportunities to sell Scottish products such as whisky and knitwear, feature heavily, but there are increasing numbers of visitor attractions featuring the animals exploited by man, both wild and domestic. Farmers have been at the forefront of these developments.

Leading examples include centres that interpret and demonstrate farmed deer, the story of production of knitwear from fleece to garment, the daily life of a working hill sheep farm and of that of a Highland estate with hunting, forestry and farming. Additionally there are zoos, wildlife parks, collections of old or rare breeds that include the commonly farmed animals.

In trying to characterize these developments there are two basic types. Firstly, there are those that use the commercial farm as their base. Investment has frequently been relatively low and the process has often been gradual with addition of better visitor facilities as attendances have increased over the years. Usually the aim has been to present a picture of everyday farming in its true setting. Where commercially successful these enterprises may grow to well beyond the size of the core agricultural business.

A second type has involved a more specialist, high investment approach. Specific demonstrations,’ including expensive audiovisual displays, live animal demonstrations and shop and restaurant facilities have involved considerable new buildings or conversion of old buildings.

Successful businesses have generally required good access and high concentrations of tourists visiting the area for other reasons. The provision of good facilities for car parking and a pleasing visual appearance are critical. Methods used by UK visitor attractions of all types have rapidly evolved to the expectation of a high degree of interaction. Domestic animals provide an excellent capacity for such interaction. Coupled with the public’s increasing awareness and interest in the environment, the continued expansion in current and new farm attractions is expected.
