Indices
Plain numbers refer to biographical entries (not pages), which are counted consecutively throughout the English translation; numbers preceded by an asterisk (â) refer to footnotes in this translation; numbers preceded by âchâ refer to chapter headings (i.e. generations) and any uncounted material that may be attached to them; the letters P and E refer to Ibn Juljulâs Prologue and Epilogue, respectively; a hyphen (-) at the beginning of a new lemma indicates the elision of the Arabic article al; bold names and numbers in index 1 (âpeopleâ) signal a main entry in Ibn Juljulâs text; lemmata that occur in a given textual entry are not referenced again to the footnotes which revolve around this entry. For reasons of style, terms registered in index 4 (âmiscellaneousâ) are sometimes given as singulars even though they may assume a plural form in the base text.
