How can the Scotland of the Highland Clearances also be the Scotland that planted a “new Edinburgh”in the midst of land once called Mapoutahi, Taieri, and Taiaroa? Is it really possible to investigate Scottish literature through the lens of post-coloniality, given its integral role in the British Empire?Scottish literary studies have much to gain from post-colonial scholarship, but negotiating Scotland’s position in regards to both Britain and its Empire has proved to be “wearied and misleading” in the words of Michael Gardiner. Likewise, considering Scottish literature in a purely post-colonial framework, risks underestimating Scotland’s colonial legacies in the Pacific and all over the world.

This chapter proposes that the term “dia-colonial” replace “post-colonial” when it comes to Scottish literature, allowing us to embrace Scotland’s complex relationship with the British Empire, rather than fearing that complexity. It develops this term by examining contemporary Scottish literary figures and their relationship to dia-coloniality, exploring the influence of post-colonial literary movements from around the world, including New Zealand’s Māori Renaissance, as well as Scotland’s independence movements of the past half-century. It also looks at Scottish literature’s impact on New Zealand as a case study for dia-coloniality. Finally, it concludes with an examination of the dia-colonial in Scotland’s literary works of the current era, and how they signal future trends in Scottish literature.
