Ugo Bardini: Artist and Dealer of Botticelliâs Cincinnati Judith

Abstract

La ricerca intende ricostruire le vicende legate alla vendita di una tavola opistografa attribuita a Sandro Botticelli e raffigurante il Ritorno di Giuditta a Betulia, opera pressochÃ© identica a quella conservata alla Galleria degli Uffizi di Firenze. Le trattative per lâalienazione dellâopera vengono condotte tra il 1953 e il 1954 e intercorsero tra Ugo Bardini (1892â1965), figlio del piÃ¹ noto antiquario Stefano Bardini, e John J. Emery, al tempo presidente del Cincinnati Art Museum (Ohio), dove la tavola Ã¨ tuttâora conservata. Lâopera era giÃ nota agli esperti del settore, tantâÃ¨ vero che nel 1949 venne chiesta in prestito per la mostra Lorenzo il Magnifico e le arti: mostra dâarte antica Firenze, allestita nelle sale di Palazzo Strozzi. Grazie allo spoglio sistematico del materiale archivistico conservato presso lâArchivio EreditÃ Bardini Ã¨ stato possibile reperire ulteriori informazioni che hanno permesso di ricostruire la storia materiale dellâopera, originariamente proveniente dalla collezione antiquariale di Stefano Bardini e successivamente acquistata dal museo americano attraverso una operazione di compravendita che si Ã¨ concretizzata grazie allâintermediazione del marchese Talleyrand, giÃ da tempo cliente della famiglia. Proprio a causa della notevole somiglianza dellâopera oggetto di questo studio con lâimportante replica degli Uffizi, non ci si Ã¨ potuti esimere dallo svolgere una ulteriore indagine anche sul dittico conservato nella prestigiosa Galleria fiorentina, la cui paternitÃ botticelliana Ã¨ unanimemente riconosciuta dalla critica. La ricerca si prospetta come poliedrica a causa della molteplicitÃ degli argomenti ivi affrontati:

parallelamente alla vicenda della alienazione del bene da parte di Ugo Bardini, si intende presentare con maggior respiro la figura ancora poco nota del figlio del âprincipe degli antiquariâ e insieme riassumere la fortuna critica legata allâopera giovanile botticelliana, senza trascurare la diatriba che divide la critica sullâautografia della tavola venduta al museo di Cincinnati.

Recently accessed archival material allows for the reconstruction of the transaction of the double-sided panel attributed to Sandro Botticelli and depicting the Return of Judith to Betulia on the front, and animals in a landscape on the back. The composition on the front is a very close derivation of a painting in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The negotiations for the sale were conducted in 1953 and 1954 and took place between Ugo Bardini (1892â1965), son of the antiquarian Stefano Bardini, and John J. Emery, at the time president of the Cincinnati Art Museum in Ohio, where the painting is still on view. The work was already known to experts in the sector, so much so that in 1949 it was requested on loan for the exhibition Lorenzo the Magnificent and the arts: an exhibition of ancient Florence art, set up in the halls of Palazzo Strozzi. A systematic examination of the archival material preserved in the lâArchivio EreditÃ Bardini, it has been possible to further reconstruct the material history of the work. The painting was originally in the inventory of Stefano Bardini, and a longtime client, the Marquis Talleyrand, mediated the transaction to America on behalf of Ugo. The paintingâs remarkable similarity to that in the Uffizi, compelled a further investigation also on the Uffizi diptych, whose Botticellian authorship is unanimously recognized by critics. In the end, this is a story of the machinations to export a painting by the otherwise little-known son of his more famous father while as the same time. At the same time, there is a summary examination of the critical fortune linked to Botticelliâs early work, which then takes into account the criticism related to the painting sold to the Cincinnati museum.
