Abstract

In the last decades, art markets have sprouted in hitherto excluded regions including Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa. However, international discourse on art markets in Africa has eclipsed the evolving art market in Nigeria. Drawing on Bourdieu’s artistic field, this research addresses how a market for contemporary art has developed in Nigeria. Interviews and historical analysis establish that the market was catalyzed by the financial deregulation necessitated by the economic depression of the late 1980s. Also highlighted are the roles of cultural entrepreneurs, especially returning emigrants from Europe and America, on recent developments in art market infrastructure, which confirms the local relevance of Bourdieu’s capital. The market in Nigeria has not achieved its potentials due mainly to deficiencies in the necessary mediating mechanisms.
