Acknowledgments
This project began more than a decade ago and during that time we have received help and encouragement from numerous people. The staff and archivists at the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) were very helpful at every stage of our work. Since the church lacks an incumbent, we approached the following officials for copyright permission to publish this transcription and to reproduce the images from the manuscripts, the Venerable Luke Miller, Archdeacon of London, and David Durlacher and Mark Crossley, churchwardens; we are very grateful for their help and approval. Additionally, we kept the staff at the LMA informed of our endeavors and the Reverend Phil Martin, Guild Vicar, has also been informed. Map images appear courtesy of the Historic Towns Trust.
In the course of this project, we have been quick to send emails to people for help with orthography, or lack of clarity in the records, or with Latin. The Latinists deserve a special acknowledgment for their talent, generosity, and good nature. Lawrence R. Poos (The Catholic University of America) and Christopher Whittick (retired Senior Archivist at East Sussex County Council, and currently an independent archivist and researcher) were unfailingly willing to take on transcriptions and translations for us. Additionally, Paul Booth, William Campbell, Martin Claussen, Godfried Croenen, Simon Harris, Jason Hawke, Charles Haworth, Lisa Howarth, Michael Hicks, Bas Jongenelen, Maura Keyne Lafferty, Diarmaid MacCulloch, John McCoy, Matt McLoughlin, James Ogier, Louise Pitre, Ian Rowney, Florinda Ruiz, Jason Smart, Dan Ungureanu, and David Winter also helped and corrected or confirmed our Latin with a minimum of derision and judgment.
In the midst of the pandemic, Adam Grounds, (Archives & Local Studies Assistant, Chiswick & Feltham Libraries, London Borough of Hounslow) responded to an email inquiry about the Minster of Hounslow. Similarly, Roy Wilde (Clerk, Tallow Chandlers Guild, London) also responded to an inquiry about some of the terminology we found in the accounts. Stephen Feeth (Archivist, Merchant Taylorsâ Company, London) responded to questions we had about some of our churchwardens and items we found in inventories. We owe each of these men a special thank you.
Finally, each of the following helped with some question, concern, idea, or plot at some time in the past decade: Alan Baragona, Jon Balserak, Charlotte Berry, Kathryn Brammall, Tom Carter, Kathleen Comerford, Will Coster, Giles Darkes, Eamon Duffy, Kay Edwards, Kenneth Fincham, Andrew Foster, Katherine French, Michael Graham, Eilish Gregory, Karen Harris, John Hayden, Julie Hoffman, Ward Holder, David Kathman, Scott Lucas, Peter Marshall, Shannon MacSheffrey, Jennifer McNabb, Salvador Ryan, John Schofield, Jeremy Smith, Elisabeth Sommer, Andrew Spicer, and Charlie Turbie.
We also wish to thank Caroline Barron, Vanessa Harding, and Julia Merritt for allowing us to speak about this project at a session of the Seminar in Medieval and Tudor London, Institute of Historical Research, Senate House, University of London, on 1 Jun 2017.
Lastly, Roanoke College helped fund research trips to London for Gary Gibbs.
We think scholars will find a wealth of interesting information in these records. The transcription really did take a village, but in the end, any mistakes are our responsibility.
