Abstract

Based on ethnographic research, this chapter traces the development of the Fei Ngan Tung Buddhism and Daoism Society 飛雁洞佛道社 (hereinafter referred to as FNT). It presents the most important events in FNT’s history which reveal the significance of spirit-writing in this society, including the founding of the society, the introduction of Daoist rituals to the altar, and the confirmation of its Daoist origin through a field visit to Sichuan 四川. After reviewing the main history of FNT, the chapter describes the spirit-writing ritual, how it is practiced today, and the role it plays for believers. The chapter intends to reveal the place and pattern of spirit-writing, and the main factors that have shaped the development of this contemporary spirit-writing society.
