Abstract

The longitudinal study comprising young people born in the years 1968 (N=41) and 1965 (N = 31) lasted for 16 years, and was conducted in four different phases: 1976, 1982-83, 1984-85, and 1991-2. It was therefore possible to study the beliefs of the individuals in the two cohorts at the ages of 8, 14, 17 and 23, and at 11, 17, 20 and 26. The young people came from a metropolitan area of Helsinki.

The following methods of data collection were used: questionnaires, word association, sentence completion tests, projective picture tests, and individual and group-focused interviews which were complemented by pictures. Questionnaires were also sent to the parents of the young people studied. The results were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods and by a content analysis.

In the results of this empirical study of young Finns, Christian religious beliefs and magic beliefs have been found which had formal and internal structures. They were part of a larger belief system which filtered the young people’s every day life. The formation of belief systems is conditioned by influences arising during different periods of culture. The content of the belief system changes in accordance with development from chilhood to adulthood. The findings showed that the formation of a belief system is a process which lasts evidently for an entire lifetime. This process contains some very permanent elements, such as certain systems of belief, which are socialized in early childhood. The implications of these results are discussed here.
