Abstract

This essay argues that the journals of Pacific exploration in the eighteenth century by John Byron, Samuel Wallis, Philip Carteret, and James Cook began to develop an engagement with and description of the ocean. They contended with a mostly unknown and uncertain space conceived as an emptiness or void in the cultural imagination. I suggest that the navigational description and the record of events in the journals engaged with that emptiness and began to delineate a sense of the experience of the ocean. This description was part of a larger imaginative engagement and of a changing relationship with the ocean centered on the marinerâs experience.
