Note on Abbreviations
In the references, names of ancient Greek and Latin authors and the titles of their works generally follow the abbreviations in The Oxford Classical Dictionary, edited by Simon Hornblower, Antony Spawforth, and Esther Eidinow, 4th ed. (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2012). For some late antique authors and works not recorded there (including Manilius, Valerius Flaccus, Maximianus Etruscus, Venantius Fortunatus, and several works of Ausonius, Claudian, and Cassiodorus), as well as the tragedies of Seneca, I have used abbreviations following A Latin Dictionary of Charlton T. Lewis and Charles Short (Oxford: Clarendon, 1969). The names and works of some humanist authors have been abbreviated by analogy with ancient names and titles. The abbreviations used are enclosed within square brackets in the General Bibliography.
An explanation of the sigla and editorial abbreviations used in the edition can be found before the Latin text and the translation on pp. 62–63.
Abbreviations commonly used for collective and reference works are clarified in the General Bibliography on p. 327.
