It takes many people and, at least for us editors, a lot of time to make a book, especially a volume with so many contributing authors. This volume’s life-cycle began with a panel at the 2019 meeting of the Society for Classical Studies in San Diego, CA. We are grateful to all of our contributors for their trust, labor, and patience during the intervening years between the initial panel and final publication, especially as we all navigated challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic in addition to anything else happening in our personal and professional lives. We thank everyone with whom we have worked at Brill, who include Giulia Moriconi, Mirjam Elbers, Giulia Moriconi, and Bart Nijsten. Thanks are also due to any and all anonymous referees of the manuscript at various stages, both for the labor they invested and for their expert suggestions and critiques.
This book is the outcome of my (Tommaso) friendship with Jesse Weiner, whose camaraderie I wish to acknowledge and celebrate. I am grateful for the support of my esteemed colleagues at Union College: Mark Toher, Hans Mueller, Stacie Raucci, Angela Commito, and Greg Callaghan—thank you for your ongoing collaboration and dedication. I would also like to extend my gratitude to my past colleagues Kassandra Miller and Nick Winters. I am truly indebted to Gareth Williams, not only for his friendship but also for his expertise. I want to express my sincerest appreciation to Judy Hallett and Barbara Gold, whose knowledge and generosity have been instrumental to the success of this endeavor. Additionally, I am deeply grateful to Robert Babcock and Ernesto Stagni for their guidance and unparalleled philological mastery. Looking back on my time at Yale, I am grateful for the support provided by Kirk Freudenburg. Gian Biagio Conte always was and still is most generous with perpetual stewardship. My deepest debt of gratitude is towards my parents, Roberto Gazzarri and Miranda Mancini, for more than can be said or written.
I (Jesse) thank Tommaso for inviting me to join him in this project and for his trust and patience over the years we have worked together. The Moroccan dinner to which he treated me while we were wrestling with proofs and indexing was a true gift. I am also appreciative of the support I’ve received from Hamilton College colleagues past and present, who include Anne Feltovich, Debra Freas, Barbara K. Gold (a contributor to this volume), Shelley P. Haley, Miriam Kamil, Amy Koenig, Alexander Perkins, Nancy Rabinowitz, Carl A. Rubino, and Martin Shedd. Additional friends, colleagues, and students who have supported me in some way on this project (extending beyond their own work and in sometimes indirect ways they might not realize) include Naomi T. Campa, Amy Coles, Simon Davis, Judith P. Hallett (a contributor to this volume), Caly Liss, John McEnroe, Konstantinos P. Nikoutsos, Byram Ozer, Walter D. Penrose, Jr., Brett M. Rogers, Benjamin Eldon Stevens (a contributor to this volume), and Nancy Sultan. The American School of Classical Studies at Athens kindly allowed me to use the Blegen Library as I drafted my own contributions. My scholarship, here and elsewhere, would not be possible without the support (and, hopefully, love) of my wife, Julie, and my child, Anchor. Thanks for putting up with me.
