Abstract

This chapter explores the emergence and impact of the Khalkhosnuri movement, known as Narodnism in Russian, in 19th-century Georgia. The Khalkhosanis, a group of radical intellectuals and activists, aimed to address the suffering and hardships of the peasantry through social equality and mobilization. They sought to educate the illiterate, establish rural schools, and distribute wealth equitably. The Khalkhosan literary group, centered around the Imedi magazine, engaged in critical discussions on sociopolitical, economic, and cultural issues. Georgian Khalkhosanis emphasized national identity and the need for a synthesis between political freedom, social equality, and economic prosperity. Their efforts significantly impacted Georgian leftist literature and contributed to the sociocultural context of the era.
