Abstract

Religion grows from many roots. The existential one seems the sturdiest of all. We have always wished to know to what extent we are autonomous in making decisions on our lives and in which measure the agencies beyond human control condition our existence. The radical wing of the Enlightenment project aside, the strategy of modern thinking concerning theology is neatly articulated by Ludwig Feuerbach in his celebrated thesis, “the secret of theology is anthropology.” Upon a closer examination of the twentieth-century philosophical conceptions, however, one is justified to suggest that a better interpretational key might be furnished if we hear the alleged grave-digger of theology with new ears and invert the Feuerbachian thesis to read instead that the secret of anthropology is theology. Indeed, not only Heidegger’s existential analytic but also Arnold Gehlen’s and Helmuth Plessner’s anthropological conceptions will assume more clarity if we thread them together with their theological underpinnings.
