A Note on Translations and Editions of Primary Sources and Referencing System
|
When English translations of ancient Greek texts are available, these are being used (see Bibliography). Where translations are modified, this is noted. Unless otherwise indicated, translations have been made by the author of this book. When a single translation, the most common is used for an ancient text, then, in the footnotes, the translator’s last name and the corresponding pages are indicated. When multiple translations of ancient texts are used, publication dates are also provided. Ancient texts in a language other than Greek are provided through translations. All citations of Cod. theod. and Cod. justin. in this book follow Mommsen’s and Krueger’s editions respectively. Quotations translated in English are: 1) from Coleman- Norton 1966, 3 vols, 2) Pharr 1952, 3) Frier et al. 2016, or 4) mine. All editions of primary sources used in this book are listed in the Bibliography (Primary Sources). Quotations in ancient Greek in the footnotes are drawn from the critical editions/editions of the ancient texts, as shown in the Bibliography (Primary Sources). When a single edition is used for an ancient text, then, in the footnotes, the editor’s last name (or the series name and number) and the corresponding pages are indicated. When multiple editions/publications of ancient texts are used, publication dates are also provided. Quotations in ancient Greek, with no reference to specific pages of the editions used, were accessed via Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG) (University of California, Irvine). The help of the TGL database in locating ancient Greek texts, especially those not known in modern literature (with references to Manichaeans and Manichaeism), was substantially valuable. The abbreviations above and the referencing system in the text and in the bibliography follow The SBL Handbook of Style: For Biblical Studies and Related Disciplines (2nd ed.), by B.J. Collins, B. Buller, J.F. Kutsko, P.H. Alexander, J. Eisenbraun, J.D. Ernest et al. Atlanta: SBL Press, 2014. |
