Abstract

In this article, we will introduce two conceptual tools which offer a new way of understanding religious texts in loyalty to the spirit of these texts; namely, Alasdair MacIntyre’s idea of tradition-constituted rationality and the theory of rawhʾ al-Mʾany, i.e., the spirit of meaning. Our model for the latter is Na’ini’s work. He was the prominent pro-constitutional jurist in 19th century Iran, whom we believe has implicitly used such ideas. Using these two conceptual tools, one can develop religious concepts and update them for the needs of the day. We will argue along with classical and objectivist hermeneutics that texts have comprehensible main meanings, which can be discovered by applying the correct rules and methods. These meanings can, then, be developed to fit the requirements of the day.
