Abstract

An overlooked component of the African American moral tradition is the contribution of those who lived and wrote under the influence of Victorianism. The “Dark Victorians” (W. E. B. Du Bois, Frederick Douglass, Ida Wells-Barnett, and Mary McLeod Bethune, for example) all accepted the usefulness and truthfulness of Victorian ethics by adapting Victorian moral views to their own experiences with life and with the Bible. This essay examines how W. E. B. Du Bois’s posthumously published work Prayers for Dark People is a model of Victorian nuanced theological interpretation of Scripture and starts a conversation about the need for its retrieval.
