Abstract

The recent commodification and apparent domestication of deer has exposed some shortcomings and brought new challenges to the ideas of livestock and wildlife. This chapter will explore how the emergence of the globalized industry of deer farming diverges from traditional wildlife management models and conceptions of deer. This emergence is claimed to be due to domestication, allowing deer farming to seemingly stand apart from the management of wild deer. However, in Britain deer have been enclosed continuously since the early medieval era, but their bodies and flesh were carefully kept from the commodity-market. Beginning in the late twentieth century, the rapid expansion of this emergent form of agriculture has few precedents. Interventions through emergent biotechnologies and traditional selective breeding techniques as well as individualization of the deer have allowed thousands of farms around the world responsible for the lives of millions of deer to have been soundly established. This new industry has seen a commodification of many products derived from deer and a global market for deer and their bodies. Nonetheless, some deer farmers have faced an uneasy path for the creation of serialized livestock animals using deer, as inherent characteristics and individuality resist reifications of a species concept. Despite considerable costs evident in deer farming endeavors, there is a pull of an idealized wildness, seemingly a deceptive contradiction for many of those who attempt to farm deer and amongst those who consume deer products.
