Abstract

The guttural consonants exhibit an influence on the vocalism in all traditions of the Hebrew language, including the autonomous tradition of the Secunda. However, there are some morphological forms where the Secunda does not present a lowering of paradigmatic vowels to /a/: These are the yiqtol pattern of the qal imperfect for verbs with first or second guttural radical consonant and the qal imperative for a â®×¢×³×³××¢â¬â verb. In verbs with a guttural radical, the other Hebrew traditions, mainly the Tiberian tradition, generally have the low vowel /a/. Therefore, concerning vowel assimilation to gutturals, the different Hebrew traditions indicate unstable attitudes, oscillating between the phonetic assimilation of vowels toward /a/ by effect of guttural consonants, on one hand, and the normalization imposed by the Systemzwang exerted by the strong pattern, on the other hand. The Secunda shows the preservation of the yiqtol vocalic pattern and its extension to guttural verbs. Interestingly, the Secunda does not generally exhibit the assimilation of vowels to gutturals in the imperfect qal of guttural verbs, while in other forms this tendency is frequently attested.
