Translatorâs Note
A word on the works of Max Horkheimer and Friedrich Pollock translated into English. As mentioned in the introductory note, many of the sources used in this book have not been translated into English before. In particular, there is no translation of Horkheimer and Pollockâs Späne or Memorandums, nor of the youthful Lâîle heureuse. A partial translation exists in English of the Notizen, hence those aphorisms that are not included in the volume Dawn and Decline are my own translation from volume 6 of the Gesammelte Schriften. Of the correspondence referred to in this book, a selection of Horkheimerâs letters have been translated in the volume Max Horkheimer. A Life in Letters, whereas others appear in English here for the first time, in particular those to the architect Peppo Brivio. With regard to Pollockâs text Automation, there only exists an English translation of the first edition and not of the overhauled second edition. The first-edition English translation has nevertheless been used as a basis for the translations of the quoted passages where possible.
