Acknowledgments
In producing this volume, we have incurred many debts. We thank first of all our contributing authors. They first presented the papers that would ultimately become the chapters to this volume at the Constitutional History: Comparative Perspectives conference in Chicago in the spring of 2019. Since then, they have worked with great diligence and with good humour to finalize their chapters and to respond to our multiple requests for revisions. Many of our contributors experienced suffering and loss as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We are especially grateful for their perseverance in such challenging times.
We thank the University of Illinois Program in Constitutional Theory, History and Law for proving generous funding for our conference. Grant Huscroft, our conference keynote speaker, deserves special recognition for framing the conference discussions and for the feedback he gave to our individual authors. We thank Mary Parsons, Carrie May-Borich and Laura Lotzgesell for their help. We thank again Mark Somos for finding us a publishing home with Brill and for his unwavering enthusiasm for the project. We also thank Alessandra Giliberto at Brill for her hard work. A special thanks goes to Katherine Schauer for her excellent research assistance.
Most of all, we thank our families for their love, patience, and support.
