By the end of the 1930s and the beginning of the 1940s, around 300,000 German-speaking people of diverse political, social, and religious extraction were living in Argentina. Adolf Hitler’s proclamation as chancellor in Germany had a strong impact on the intense social life of this heterogeneous group of individuals and modified its relationship to the different sectors of local society.
This chapter analyzes the various stances taken by German-speaking residents in the country towards the National Socialist regime, the development of the Second World War, the fall of the Third Reich, and the revelation of its crimes. In this setting, it goes on to assess how the changing world juncture and Argentine political practices influenced the reconfigura-tion of its collective identifications.
