Abstract

There is a growing research interest in what it means to be bilingual while being socialized in a (second language) monolingual society and education system. On the basis of multilingualism research of the last three decades, some doubts remain about the advantages of bilingual education as research tends to focus on bilingual contexts involving languages with high prestige, e.g., English. On the other hand, languages with a lower prestige in western societies, e.g. the so-called âmigration languagesâ such as Turkish, are still seen as obstacles on the journey towards second language acquisition and scholarly achievement. Furthermore, the correlation between studentsâ socioeconomic background and their scholarly success, which is confirmed by international student assessment studies, apparently does not change the prevailing negative status of these first language(s). With these facts as a starting point, the present study investigates the linguistic effect of bilingual schooling on bilingual secondary studentsâ writing competence in their first and second language. Based on this studyâs empirical evidence, this paper challenges the prevailing view on the dominant role of the second language in bilingual studentsâ education as well as on multilingualism in the migration context.
